Enguarde

The Enguarde baseboard supported a family of low-power Chromebooks designed primarily for classroom and student use. Built on the x86 architecture, Enguarde devices prioritized affordability, battery life, and simplicity over raw performance, making them well-suited for web-based coursework, standardized testing platforms, and basic productivity tasks. Their compact designs and lightweight components helped accelerate ChromeOS adoption in education environments where reliability, centralized management, and ease of use were essential.

With an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) of September 2021, Enguarde-based devices no longer receive ChromeOS updates or security patches, which can limit their practicality in modern classroom settings and expose them to security risks over time. While still capable of handling very light workloads or offline use, the aging hardware and lack of continued support mean these systems are best suited for repurposing, experimenting with alternative lightweight operating systems, or use as dedicated single-purpose terminals.
