Candy
The Candy baseboard was the foundation for a family of budget Chromebooks, aimed squarely at affordability and accessibility. Utilizing the x86_64 architecture, Candy-based systems typically shipped with entry-level Intel processors, modest memory configurations, and eMMC storage - enough to handle lightweight browsing, online learning, and cloud-based productivity. These devices were ideal for students and basic home users, offering a straightforward ChromeOS experience at a low cost while maintaining Google’s hallmark emphasis on speed, security, and simplicity.
Over time, however, the limited performance envelope of Candy devices became apparent as web applications and ChromeOS itself grew more demanding. With an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date of September 1, 2021, they no longer receive new ChromeOS features or security patches. While these systems can still function for basic offline tasks or experimentation, users seeking modern performance and continued support are better served by newer, more capable baseboards.
