Butterfly
The Butterfly baseboard supported a generation of budget-focused Chromebooks designed to bring ChromeOS to entry-level users at a very accessible price point. Built on the x86_64 architecture, these devices prioritized affordability and portability over raw performance, making them suitable for simple web browsing, online learning, and basic productivity tasks. Their lightweight hardware configurations helped expand ChromeOS into new markets and schools, offering a reliable cloud-centric experience for users with modest computing needs.
However, the limited processing power and memory typical of Butterfly devices mean they struggle with modern multitasking demands and increasingly complex web applications. With an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) of February 1, 2018, this baseboard family has been out of support for several years and no longer receives critical security or feature updates. While still functional for offline, single-purpose, or hobby use cases, these systems are best considered legacy hardware today, and users looking for a smoother ChromeOS experience should explore more modern platforms.
