Bob
The Bob baseboard is an ARM-based ChromeOS platform built around the Rockchip RK3399 processor, known for its efficiency and solid performance in lightweight, mobile computing environments. Designed primarily for convertible Chromebooks, Bob devices were among the first to fully embrace ARM’s multicore performance while maintaining low thermals and extended battery life. This architecture allowed manufacturers to create sleek, fanless systems that offered smooth web browsing, Android app compatibility, and efficient multitasking without sacrificing portability or affordability.
Although not positioned as a high-performance baseboard, Bob proved to be a reliable foundation for education and casual use. Its balanced performance and affordability helped bring ChromeOS to a broader audience, especially in developing markets and classroom settings. With an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date of August 1, 2023, Bob-based devices have recently reached end-of-life support. However, their open hardware nature and ARM architecture make them excellent candidates for running alternative operating systems such as ChromiumOS derivatives or lightweight Linux distributions.
