Google LLC is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Mountain View, California, and a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. Founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google is best known for its search engine, but its innovations extend across cloud computing, software, hardware, and artificial intelligence. In the hardware space, Google designs flagship devices that showcase the best of its software and ecosystems, including Android smartphones, Nest smart home products, and ChromeOS laptops. Through these products, Google sets benchmarks for performance, design, and seamless integration with its services.
In the ChromeOS ecosystem, Google was the original driving force behind the Chromebook concept, launching the Cr-48 in December 2010 as an experimental prototype distributed to developers and early adopters. The Cr-48 laid the foundation for ChromeOS, demonstrating the potential of a lightweight, web-first operating system. Google later introduced the Pixel Chromebook line, including the Chromebook Pixel (2013, 2015) and the Pixelbook series, which pushed ChromeOS into the premium market with high-resolution displays, aluminum builds, and convertible designs. These devices serve as reference models, exemplifying Google’s vision for ChromeOS: secure, fast, and deeply connected to the cloud. While no longer producing Chromebooks regularly, Google’s legacy through the Cr-48 and Pixel lines continues to influence modern ChromeOS hardware standards.
